As well as volunteering their time and expertise, Greater Vancouver REALTORS® and their offices also personally donate to or fundraise for a diverse range of charities.
Between 2007 and 2010, REALTORS® let us know they had donated more than $8.5 million.
Greater Vancouver REALTORS® donated $2.4 million to charities in 2010
In 2010, members of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) donated $2.4 million to charities, bringing the four year total to $8.5 million.
"REALTORS® are very connected to their communities, so it's only natural they would consistently donate to and raise funds and volunteer for charities," said Rosario Setticasi, REBGV president, 2011-12.
To determine each year’s total, members and real estate offices are asked to share information about their charitable donations.
Along with other real estate boards and associations across Canada, more than $18 million in REALTOR® donations has been identified over the past four years.
REALTORS Care® programs include the annual collection of blankets and clothing for those in need and fundraising for housing-related charities.

$2.3 million donated to charity in 2009 by Greater Vancouver REALTORS®
The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) members continued to donate to or raise funds for charity despite the downturn in the economy last year.
In 2009, Greater Vancouver REALTORS® and their companies collectively donated or fundraised nearly $2.3 million for charity.
“Through thick and thin, our members continue to support local, national and international charities that are involved in a variety of causes,” said Jake Moldowan, REBGV president, 2010-2011 .
“Members also volunteer countless hours helping their communities become even better places to live.”
To determine each year’s total, members and real estate offices are asked to share information about their charitable donations, which in 2009 totalled $2,264,921.43.
Previous totals were $1.2 million in 2007 and $2.6 million in 2008, which included a single $1 million donation.
Over the past three years, members have helped charities by donating or fundraising at least $6.1 million.

$2.6 million donated to charities in 2008 by Greater Vancouver REALTORS®
In 2008, our members and their companies collectively donated at least $2.6 million to more than 100 charitable organizations. This compares to $1.2 million donated the previous year.
“To more than double our previous total is fantastic news and once again shows how generous our members are,” said Scott Russell, Real Estate Board Greater Vancouver (REBGV) president, 2009-10.
“Donating money is only part of how REALTORS® contribute to our communities each year. Countless hours are spent volunteering in a variety of activities including children’s sports, animal welfare, and the REALTORS Care® Blanket Drive.”
REALTORS® across the country have reported donations totalling $10,551,616 according to the Canadian REALTORS Care® Foundation. These donations were made in 2007 and 2008.
This year saw the first $1 million donation included in our total.
Ron Antalek, RE/MAX Ridge Meadows, had donated $1 million to Ridge Meadows Hospital that will help create a new home for the in-patient psychiatric unit.
“I had agreed to go public with this contribution so it would encourage other people to donate to the hospital,” said Antalek. “And that’s exactly what happened.”
Those who work with charitable organizations have long recognized that when donations are made public, they see a related increase in donations from other sources.
Scott MacDonald, Senior Development Officer with Covenant House concurs and adds, “Increased publicity from a donation also helps to increase the credibility of that organization in the eyes of potential donors.”
To collate these contributions, Greater Vancouver members and real estate offices were asked to share information about their charitable donations in 2008.
Greater Vancouver REALTORS® donate over $1 million to charity in 2007!
As part of a REALTORS Care® Foundation initiative, the Board recently researched how much our members had personally donated to charity.
The results were pleasantly surprising. Within a short period, we learned that, in 2007, 31 members and 71 offices had donated the generous amount of $1,088,743.54! This number doesn’t include the amount of money that members helped to fundraise.
“If these members can account for more than a million dollars given to charity, we can only imagine what our entire membership donated last year, and what impact that has had on our communities and the charities they support,” said W. Dave Watt, Board president, 2008-09.
This is the first time a Canadian real estate board has attempted to measure member donations. This initiative is organized under the national REALTORS Care® Foundation umbrella.
