The winter Olympics have reached our backyard and scores of REALTORS® are set to put their overflowing community pride on display and participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

In learning about the various activities and opportunities that people in the real estate community are up to during the Games, we quickly discovered that being an Olympic volunteer often involves more than merely showing up.

Mascot love

In Richmond, Larry Traverence, Dexter Associates Realty, will be having a different kind of Olympic experience. He has been involved with the Richmond Spirit of BC as vice-chair for the past two years and was attracted by the opportunities to promote the spirit and the legacy of the games, which include the arts, culture and literacy, as well as sport.

Larry has also been an enthusiastic advocate for the Paint the Town red program, which encourages people and businesses to wear or display the colour red in support of our Canadian Olympic athletes during the Games (see page seven for more details).

Larry’s passion for the games spilled over into dressing up as Quatchi, one of the Olympic mascots, for the Richmond leg of the Olympic Torch Relay on February 9. He enthusiastically cheered the relay runners and entertained the crowds.

Larry’s preparation for this role was in earnest: he sat in a sauna for many hours to acclimatize to the warm conditions of the Quatchi suit.
