The seaside village of Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast

The picturesque Sunshine Coast town of Gibsons, known for its historic cottages, tree-lined streets and colourful gardens, has received two international awards from the United Nations endorsed International Awards for Liveable Communities.

Gibsons has won a gold award for being the world's most liveable community (with a population of less than 20,000) in the “Whole City” category.

The town has also won first place, among all finalist cities, for outstanding achievement in “Planning for the Future."

World's greenest community

The first award means that Gibsons has been recognized internationally as one of the  world’s greenest communities, which is a significant achievement.

The award is designed to encourage best practices, innovation and leadership in providing a vibrant, environmentally sustainable community that improves the quality of life for residents.

To be eligible, Gibsons met six criteria:

1. enhancement of the landscape
2. heritage management
3. environmentally sensitive practices
4. community sustainability
5. healthy lifestyles
6. planning for the future.

Planning for the future

The Planning for the Future award recognizes Gibsons for projects including the Upper Gibsons Neighbourhood Plan and the Geo-exchange District Energy System.

The Upper Gibsons Neighbourhood Plan includes guidelines for energy, water and land conservation; for promoting alternate forms of transportation; and for allowing for a diverse cross-section of residents of all ages, incomes and stages of life. The planned Geo-exchange District Energy System, the first of its kind in North America, will capture renewable energy from heat exchangers in the ground on municipally owned green space. The system will pump heat from the ground to residential and commercial buildings. Congratulations Gibsons!
