Property taxes are assessed by the local municipal hall for the coming year to pay for a range of services including roads, sewers, libraries and community centres. Everyone in the community prepays their taxes for the coming year. If you buy a home in the middle of the year, unless the property seller has stated in the Contract of Purchase and Sale that they will pay property taxes (as an incentive for buyers), then you must prepay your share of the year to avoid penalties.
