Four years of fundraising through the REALTORS Care® Shelter Drive has resulted in $122,000 for several housing-related charities in the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) area.

Part of that total includes the $16,342 raised during the 2012-13 Shelter Drive. Those funds were distributed between the Alouette Home Start Society, Maple Ridge; Covenant House, Vancouver; and the Union Gospel Mission, East Vancouver.

“Housing charities are challenged by a constant demand for their services, but with limited financial resources to help,” said Sandra Wyant, Board president, 2012-13. “By donating to the Shelter Drive, members are helping those in need find a safe place to live.”

The Shelter Drive is funded entirely by member donations.

How donations will be used

Alouette Home Start Society provides supportive programs and temporary housing for youth and adults who want to leave the streets in the Maple Ridge area. Alouette will use its donation for their Route 29 program designed to house and counsel youth for successful integration into the community.

Covenant House helps young people aged 16-24 who have fled physical, emotional or sexual abuse, those who have been forced from their homes or those who have aged out of foster care. Its funds will help youth have access to Covenant House programs so they can start a better life.

Union Gospel Mission is an urban relief organization providing hope for the hungry, hurting and homeless. It aims to ease the burden of the most vulnerable, rebuild the lives of the broken and offer dignity to  those who feel cast aside. The donation will give women and men access to a safe, warm place to sleep and programs to help them make sustainable changes in their lives.

The REALTORS Care® Shelter Drive was created in 2009 and supports up to three housing-related charities a year from across Greater Vancouver. Each year the charities are selected from recommendations made by members.
